Official told that the 405 Freeway could reopen earlier than scheduled if demolition work on the Mulholland Drive bridge goes smoothly.
All ramps, freeway connectors and lanes on the 405 are set to be back in operation by 6 a.m. Monday, but it could reopen earlier if contractor Kiewit can finish and clean up the pavement ahead of schedule.
"We don't know if we will be able to do it or when," said Dan Kulka, a community relations manager for Kiewit. "We will keep our eye on this throughout the weekend.they Come Sunday afternoon or evening they should have a good idea what we can do."
The 405, which handles an average of 281,000 vehicles a day, is to be shut down for about 53 hours from the 10 Freeway to the 101 Freeway on the northbound side and from the 101 Freeway to Getty Center Drive.
The closure is designed to give construction workers enough time to raze the southern half of the bridge, which will be chipped away using cutting saws, acetylene torches and jackhammers mounted on heavy equipment.
About 4,000 tons of concrete may be removed.
